Case Studies

Heading away from portables in an educational context, i thought looking at a few case studies from other areas might be a good way to get some inspiration for how the actual structure could be as relocatable and 'R.A.R.E' as possible.

This site is a case study on a timber house in Queensland. There is a PDF within the site but a quick quote from the summary says "its' timber framed construction enables cost effective removal of a house from its' site and its' relocation to another site. This generates an exciting array of possibilities, encompassing cost and environmental benefits, architectural possibilities of improvement and reinterpretation, and historical continuity through reuse".

QT Homes is a Queensland based company that specialises in relocatable houses. Their houses range from 1 to 5 bedroom with 1 bedroom homes selling at $24,000.

I picked out a few images from the site:

Well hope some of these different approaches to relocatable buildings outside of the educational area help!

Week Two - More Research

So the research continues as a few attempts over the past week to begin a solid design seem to have failed. Hoping that by better understanding how portables work, what is required within them and what the inherent issues within them are that need attention a few more refined ideas can go down on paper.

First page i found was from the Department of Education which gave a very brief outline of when and where portables are required. What was more interesting though was a PDF that was attached. I've got both the link here for the site and the PDF, look at the PDF first but if it doesn't link just get to it through the site.

Site: http://www.gippsland.vic.edu.au/SchoolSupport/SchoolFacilities/RelocatableTransfer/tabid/103/Default.aspx

PDF: http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/edulibrary/public/propman/facility/RelocatableProgram_Aug2005.pdf

Figuring that knowledge can't help i went to where all the good info is...Wiki! Here i found seperate pages on modular buildings and portable buildings so i thought it was worth linking both.

Modular: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modular_building

Portable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_building

So hopefully with this new information a few better ideas will come along. Only 3 weeks until the design is finalised...

Relocatable Buildings - Images

Here are a few random images from the websites in the previous post, these images are all of educational portables, save you looking through the sites if you dont want to!

Relocatable Buildings - Product Sites

So instead of just wasting time i figured i should start some research for the upcoming projects so i've found a few useful sites with information on relocatable buildings. Hopefully you get some inspiration from them.

This site has links to various types of relocatables, one being education!

These are mainly product sites so it gives a good indication of where portables are currently at and where they could possibly end up...

Here we go again...

So another semester of blogging begins!!! Nothing to say at the moment, just killing time waiting for the construction lecture to start.....
